Biography
American lyric soprano Elizabeth Wiles hails originally from Houston, Texas. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston, and completed her Master of Music degree at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. Between university terms she participated in the Merola Apprentice Program in San Francisco, followed by a 30-city tour of Carmen—alternating the roles of Micaela and Frasquita—under the auspices of Western Opera Theatre, an outreach of the San Francisco Opera Company.
From 2003 to 2016, she was in residence at the Saarländisches Staatstheater in Saarbrücken, Germany, undertaking a wide variety of roles, including Rosina, Gilda, Lucia, Musetta, Pamina, Susanna, Dido, Gretel, Zdenka, Zerlina, and Marzelline. Other noteworthy roles: Poppea in Agrippina (for which she was awarded the Staatstheater’s Sponsor Club Prize), Eurydice in Orpheus in the Underworld, Meroe in Alessandro Scarlatti’s Il Tigrane, and the title role in Franz Schubert’s Sakontala (which earned her a nomination by the German magazine Opernwelt for outstanding young artist of the year). An exhaustive repertoire listing may be found in the chart below.
Often sought as a soloist for concerts and recitals, many of them broadcast live by Saarland Radio, Ms. Wiles has lent her voice to a number of chamber music concerts, including a rendition of the Wesendonck Lieder of Richard Wagner, and several lieder evenings at the invitation of the Richard Wagner Associations of Saarbrücken and Trier. She also has been a repeat soloist at the Christmas concerts of the Trierer Sängerknaben, and a regular participant in the concerts sponsored by the Basilica of St. Johann, Saarbrücken, serving as soprano soloist in the St. Mark Passion of J. S. Bach, the Stabat Mater of Pergolesi, and the Christmas Oratorio of Saint-Saëns.
At present Elizabeth is enjoying a flurry of freelance engagements in a variety of operatic roles and concert performances at diverse venues. She also pursues an avocation in tutoring young singers.
